Transforming an ordinary photograph into a stylish grayscale bead motif is both easy and very effective. With PhotoPearls software for MacOS and Windows, you can create bead patterns. Here, we go through the entire process – from image to finished bead art.

1. Select image and filter

Start by uploading your photo using “Select image”. For best results, choose a portrait or an image with clear contrasts.

Once the image is selected – use filter number 5 (grayscale). This provides soft, even color fields that work perfectly for beads and give a more realistic final result.

2. Adjust the size to fit your project

The next step is to choose the size of your motif. Here, it's important to consider:

  • A larger motif = more beads = more details
  • A smaller motif = simpler but less detailed

Adjust the size to your intended frame or mounting surface. 

Steg 3: Beskär bilden för att fokusera på motivet och ta bort onödig bakgrund för tydligare resultat.

3. Crop for better focus

Now choose which part of the image to use. This step makes a big difference.

By cropping out unnecessary background and focusing on the subject (e.g., a face), the result becomes much clearer and more impactful.

Steg 4: Justera ljus, kontrast och gråtoner för att optimera hur bilden översätts till pärlor.

4. Adjust light, contrast, and gray tones

In this step, the image is converted to beads. Here you can fine-tune:

  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • Distribution of gray shades

Small adjustments here can elevate the entire image – especially in faces where shadows and light create form and depth.

Steg 5: Redigera manuellt genom att ta bort eller lägga till pärlor för bättre detaljer och skarpare konturer.

5. Fine-tune manually

Once the image is generated, you can go in and edit it manually.

Here you can:

  • Remove individual beads that are misplaced
  • Clarify lines
  • Add small details

6. Save and print your pattern

Once you are satisfied with your motif, it's time to finalize:

  • Save your pattern
  • Print the bead boards
  • Generate the shopping list for the correct beads

Once your motif is finished and ironed, it's time to mount it.
